All black players on these European teams should stay away from nominating themselves for penalty shootouts. At least, if things don't go right, they will not come after you. Remember what English fans did to Saka and other black English players who missed penalty kicks in some World Cup matches?

We cry foul when others discriminate against us, yet we normalize tribalism and prejudice at home. Look at what happened to Asamoah Gyan after his penalty miss against Uruguay in the 2010 World Cup. A player who had carried the hopes of a nation became the target of years of insults and hatred over a single moment. More than a decade later, some still haven't forgiven him.
Now we see Benjamin Asare being judged by some because of his Ga accent, and I even heard someone say Ghana can't win the World Cup "with Jordan." How is that any different from prejudice?
Psychologists would likely describe this as in-group bias and social identity bias—our tendency to favour those we identify with while unfairly judging those we see as "different," even within our own society. It also reflects the fundamental attribution error, where we reduce people to a single mistake or stereotype instead of judging them fairly.
As Martin Luther King Jr. reminded us, "Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere." And as Nelson Mandela said, "No one is born hating another person." If we truly reject racism, then we must also reject tribalism, stereotyping, and selective outrage.
Perhaps Okatakyie Afrifa captured our contradiction best: "If it is about us, then it is good." Until we confront that mindset, our condemnation of discrimination will continue to sound selective. Asamoah Djan, I am sorry!

When loyalty to one's group becomes hostility toward another, tribalism becomes a mirror of racism. Progress begins when we stop asking, "What group are you from?" and start asking, "Who are you?"
