Asamoah Gyan is a former Black Stars player
Former Ghana captain Asamoah Gyan has criticised the Black Stars' performance following their 1-0 defeat to Colombia in the Round of 32 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, questioning the team's lack of urgency and tactical approach.
Ghana's campaign came to an end in Kansas City after John Arias scored the only goal of the match, with the Black Stars failing to register a single shot on target.
Speaking on SuperSport after the game, Gyan expressed his disappointment with Ghana's response after falling behind, insisting the players did not show enough desire to get back into the contest.
"The way Ghana played today, I don't like it when you are losing and do not show any urgency. It's frustrating. Show the world you want to win," the country's all-time leading scorer said.
Gyan also questioned the decision to alter the team's tactical approach after an impressive defensive display in the goalless draw against England during the group stage.
"In my view, we should have kept playing the way we played against England. It worked for us. If we keep changing tactics during the tournament, there is a problem," he added.
The Black Stars entered the knockout stage after progressing from Group L as one of the tournament's best third-placed teams, having collected four points from victories over Panama, a draw against England, and a narrow defeat to Croatia.
However, Ghana struggled to create meaningful chances against Colombia and finished the match without testing the opposition goalkeeper.
The defeat ended Ghana's World Cup campaign with one win, one draw, and two defeats. Carlos Queiroz's side scored just two goals and conceded three in four matches, exiting the tournament in the Round of 32 despite a disciplined defensive showing for much of the competition.
