Ghana sports fund targets lasting funding structure – Dr David Wuaku

The Administrator of the Ghana Sports Fund, Dr David Wuaku, has outlined an ambitious vision to establish a resilient and sustainable funding structure for sports development in Ghana, describing it as the key legacy he hopes to leave behind.

According to Dr Wuaku, the priority is to build a trusted, fund-based system that will continue to support sports development regardless of changes in political leadership.

"The legacy, number one, is to establish a very robust and resilient fund-based structure, a foundation that, I pray, not even political power can shake. A trusted system of funding and developing sports," he said.

He explained that the long-term objective is to create a sustainable framework capable of identifying and nurturing talented athletes from the grassroots through to the international stage.

Dr Wuaku also proposed the establishment of a state-owned sports development academy to complement Ghana's sports infrastructure and ensure equal opportunities for young athletes across the country.

He noted that such an institution would provide world-class training and development pathways for talented individuals, including those from disadvantaged backgrounds.

"We should have a state-owned sports development academy that will develop people from nowhere. People without even a family should have access to those highly technical developmental stages," he stated.

The Ghana Sports Fund Administrator stressed that talent identification should never depend on personal connections, insisting that every gifted athlete deserves an opportunity to succeed.

"Sports development should not be based on who knows you or who knows somebody to know you. We should have a system that can identify talented sportsmen from anywhere even at the beaches or in the remotest parts of the country and develop them," he added.

Dr Wuaku expressed hope that future administrators would build on the foundation, creating a lasting legacy that transforms Ghana's sports ecosystem through sustainable financing, structured talent development and improved infrastructure.
