Wakaso presented the jersey to the Overlord of Dagbon
Former Ghana international, Mohammed Wakaso, has joined the growing chorus of tributes following the reported passing of Yaa Naa Mahama Abukari II.
He shared a poignant photograph of himself presenting an Alavés jersey to the revered Dagbon overlord.
The image, believed to date from Wakaso’s spell with Spanish side Alavés between the 2017/18 and 2019/20 seasons, has resurfaced as a symbol of the warm relationship that existed between the footballer and the traditional ruler.
In the photograph, the ex-Black Stars midfielder was seen handing the club shirt to the Yaa Naa, who would later become a central figure in Dagbon’s reconciliation and renewal.
Yaa Naa Mahama Abukari II, the 41st King of Dagbon, was enskinned on January 18, 2019, following a landmark peace process that ended the 16-year chieftaincy dispute between the Abudu and Andani royal gates.

His reign is widely credited with fostering unity, healing and the restoration of traditional authority across the kingdom.
Born Bukali in Mion, he was the son of Yaa Naa Mahama II and Princess Ayishetu of Kulunkpegu. News of his passing was announced on Monday, July 13, by the Head of the Dagbon Kingmakers, Kuga Naa Adam Abdulai II, after the completion of customary rites at the Gbewaa Palace in Yendi.
