Several former English footballers and pundits have expressed strong optimism about the Three Lions’ chances of defeating Argentina to reach the final of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The semi-final clash will take place on July 15, 2026 in the United States.

England enter the game full of confidence after knockout-stage victories over Mexico and Norway, with standout performances from Harry Kane and Jude Bellingham, who have each scored six goals.

On Argentina’s side, captain Lionel Messi has led the charge with eight goals, guiding his team through scrappy wins against Egypt and Cape Verde in the knockout rounds.

Ahead of the clash, many English pundits argued that the Three Lions have looked superior in their previous matches compared to the defending champions, and are on course for a momentous victory.

Most believe England will exploit Argentina’s weaknesses despite their resilient comebacks in earlier games.

Read the comments below:

Troy Deeney was brimming with confidence: “I think we’ll batter Argentina. We’ll win at least 2–0, comfortably. At the back, they’re all over the place. Their central midfielders aren’t controlling anything. They only have Messi.”

Gary Neville noted that England will capitalize on Argentina’s defensive flaws: “I do not see any way we won’t score at least 2 goals against Argentina. I call them the best-worst central defensive duo in the world. They go from the sublime to the ridiculous…

“You’ve got Cristian Romero and Lisandro Martínez who seem to give away a goal between them per game. Then you see them again and it turns out they’re scoring goals, winning headers, and popping up everywhere.”

Ian Wright stated that England will break Argentina’s resilience: “I think we will beat Argentina. The way they play and how narrow they are. I think we are going to block them and break them.”

Simon Jordan, former Crystal Palace chairman, dismissed Argentina’s aura: “Argentina are not a world-beating side. They are an infinitely beatable side. If you put a good team against them, they won’t come back. They have brilliant players, but man for man England are capable of beating them.”
