The same cannot be said for officiating at many games when nasty challenges like heavy shoulder to shoulder, excessive pulling and holding, strong elbow to body blows became the norm. There were instances when one wondered whether these were MIXED MARTIAL EVENTS and anything but football! One could infer that these displays were tolerated in deference to high-impact and violent sports like American football and ice hockey in the host nations. Notably these games require sportsmen to wear protective clothing. Fotball is a contact sport, yes, but has no place for excessive force nor brutality. FIFA is responsible for the safety of players on the pitch and should take this seriously. VAR left a lot to be desired. In fact, there were instances when it was difficult to fathom what some VAR officials thought their tasks were. Perhaps one solution would be to introduce AI-enabled VAR which would send both audio and visual alerts to relevant officials. This should lead to greater transparency.

Hopefully the return of the world cup to Europe in 2030 would treat football enthusiasts over the world to more decent and beautiful football.
