Government spent GH¢68m on Black Stars’ World Cup campaign – Ato Forson

The government of Ghana spent GH¢68 million to support the Black Stars’ participation at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Finance Minister Dr Cassiel Ato Forson has revealed.

Presenting the 2026 Mid-Year Budget Review in Parliament on Thursday, July 23, Dr Forson disclosed that the amount was paid to assist Ghana’s preparations for and participation in the tournament hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico.

“To support Ghana's participation in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, an amount of GH¢68 million has been paid,” Dr Forson told Parliament.

Ghana qualified for the 2026 World Cup after topping Group I in the African qualifiers and entered the competition hoping to improve on their disappointing group-stage exit at the 2022 tournament in Qatar.

The Black Stars, under head coach Carlos Queiroz, competed in a tough group against England, Croatia and Panama.

Ghana produced a disciplined campaign, securing qualification for the knockout stage after the group phase before their journey came to an end in the Round of 32 against Colombia.
