I expect Kofi Adams to block Kurt Okraku from running for a third term – Kwaku Yeboah

Sports journalist Dan Kwaku Yeboah has said he expects the Minister of Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, to prevent Ghana Football Association (GFA) President Kurt Okraku from running for a third term in office.

He cited how the prolonged stay of former GFA President Kwesi Nyantakyi was marred by corruption allegations, noting that Kurt Okraku appears to be adopting a similar approach.

The Peace FM sports journalist argued that the current GFA President’s decision to amend the constitution to allow a third-term bid is dangerous for football in Ghana.

“In five years, Nyantakyi had done almost everything, World Cup and AFCON participations, and if he had left the role, by now we would be begging him to come back. FIFA realized that once a person stays longer, things get worse, so the constitution was amended to allow only two terms, and the club officials agreed.

"Kurt became the first person to enjoy the two terms and leave office, yet he doesn’t want to, as previously it was unlimited,” he said in Twi during an interview with UTV.

He went on to criticize Kofi Adams for being nonchalant about the issue, rejecting claims that the minister does not want to interfere in football affairs.

Kwaku Yeboah stressed that he expects the sports minister to write to FIFA to block the move for a third-term bid, allowing a different person to continue, otherwise the problems will persist.

“He has changed it, that’s why I expect Kofi Adams to stamp his authority to disallow it because of similar precedent that destroyed football in the country. The government should write to FIFA to block it. But he said he doesn’t want to talk about the GFA’s issue… If we allow it again, then the power corruption continues,” he added.
