'You're 17!?' - Australian sprinter hails Ghana's Hayford Addai at Commonwealth Games

Australian para-sprinter Jaydon Page showed that sport is about more than medals after taking time to encourage Ghana’s Hayford Addai following the Men’s 100m T47 final at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games.

Page, who finished just ahead of the 17-year-old Ghanaian in fourth place with a time of 10.97 seconds on Wednesday, July 19, 2026, approached Addai moments after the race to congratulate him on his remarkable performance.

“You’re 17? Thats impressive. I’m proud of you man,” Page told the young Ghanaian before offering more words of encouragement.

When Addai reflected on narrowly missing out on a medal after finishing fifth in a personal best 10.99 seconds, Page reminded him to focus on the bigger picture.

“Are you disappointed with that? Common man it’s your first big game, there’s more to come. I’m proud of you.”

The exchange came after Addai produced one of Ghana’s standout performances at the Games.

The teenager shattered his previous personal best of 11.09 seconds, becoming the first Ghanaian T47 sprinter to officially run under 11 seconds.

Although he narrowly missed the podium in a highly competitive final, Addai’s display confirmed his rapid rise in para-athletics.

The teenager had already announced himself on the international stage earlier this year by winning gold at the World Para Athletics Grand Prix meetings in Dubai and Rabat.
