The High Court in Accra has quashed the Ghana Chess Association’s (GCA) decision to suspend chess player and instructor Miracle Morris Stephen from all chess-related activities in Ghana.

The court ruled that the association’s February 2026 disciplinary action was wrongful, violated its own statutes and breached the rules of natural justice.

Presided over by Justice Barbara Tetteh-Charway, the court found that Miracle Morris Stephen was not given the required opportunity to be heard before the suspension was imposed.

The court consequently described the suspension as a “nullity ab initio” and ordered compensation of GH¢20,000 for the player, in addition to GH¢5,000 in costs.

Stephen was suspended by the GCA on February 7, 2026, following his withdrawal from the Ghana National Chess Championships held in January.

He had withdrawn from the competition on the penultimate day, citing health reasons.

The suspension effectively barred him from participating in chess tournaments and engaging in other chess-related activities in Ghana.

However, the High Court has now overturned the decision, ruling that the GCA’s disciplinary process did not comply with the principles of natural justice.

The judgment therefore brings an end to the suspension and provides relief for the chess player following his legal challenge against the association’s decision.
