Ghana midfielder Kwasi Sibo has suffered a transfer setback after Turkish Super Lig side Gençlerbirliği pulled out of their move for the free agent.

Sibo had reached a preliminary agreement with the Ankara-based club earlier this month and was reportedly set to join on a two-year contract with an option for another season.

However, Gençlerbirliği have now abandoned the move after opting to sign Senegalese midfielder Cheikh Niasse instead.

Niasse, 26, joined the Turkish club on loan from Italian side Hellas Verona with an option to make the move permanent at the end of the season.

He made 20 Serie A appearances for Verona last season.

The decision represents a frustrating turn of events for Sibo, who had reportedly made Gençlerbirliği his preferred destination despite receiving more lucrative offers elsewhere.

The 28-year-old became a free agent after leaving Spanish club Real Oviedo, where he spent the previous two seasons.

He also played an important role in Ghana’s 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign, featuring in all four matches.

Sibo’s performances in Spain and for the Black Stars had attracted interest from several clubs, including reported approaches from England, France, Egypt and the Middle East.
