Caleb Yirenkyi will play his first ever Premier League game against Arsenal
Frank Lampard has handed Ghanaian midfielder Caleb Yirenkyi a starting berth as Coventry City make their long-awaited return to the Premier League against Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium.
Yirenkyi starts in midfield alongside Matt Grimes and Nigerian international Frank Onyeka as Coventry face the reigning Premier League champions in the opening game of the 2026/27 season on Friday, August 21, 2026.
The fixture marks Coventry’s first appearance in England’s top flight in 25 years, with the club returning to the Premier League after securing promotion under Lampard last season.
For Yirenkyi, the occasion represents a significant milestone just weeks after his move to Coventry from Danish club FC Nordsjælland.

The 20-year-old Ghanaian became a major investment for the Sky Blues, with Coventry reportedly paying a club-record £26 million to secure his services ahead of their Premier League campaign.
Lampard has moved quickly to show his faith in the midfielder by throwing him straight into the starting XI against one of the division’s strongest sides.
Yirenkyi will be expected to provide energy, ball progression and defensive discipline in a midfield tasked with coping with Arsenal’s quality.
The Ghanaian’s Premier League debut comes on one of the biggest stages possible, with Coventry beginning their top-flight comeback against the defending champions in north London.
