Hearts, Aduana, Kotoko and Others: All GPL winners since 2000

As the Ghana Premier League prepares for the 2026/27 season, the history of the competition since the turn of the millennium tells a fascinating story of dominance, disruption and the rise of new champions.

The early years of the 2000s belonged almost entirely to Ghana’s two biggest clubs, Accra Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko.

Hearts of Oak opened the new millennium as champions and went on to win three consecutive titles between 2000 and 2002.

Asante Kotoko ended that run in 2003, before Hearts reclaimed the crown in 2004/05.

The rivalry continued through the decade. Kotoko won in 2005, Hearts in 2006/07, Kotoko in 2007/08 and Hearts again in 2008/09.

But the traditional order was eventually broken.

Aduana Stars became the first major new force of the period when they won the 2009/10 title in their debut season in the top flight. Berekum Chelsea followed in 2010/11, securing their first league crown.

Kotoko then returned to the summit, winning three successive titles from 2011/12 to 2013/14.

Ashanti Gold ended that run in 2014/15, before Wa All Stars, now known as Legon Cities, claimed their first championship in 2015/16.

Aduana Stars returned to the top in 2016/17, becoming only the second club outside the traditional Hearts-Kotoko axis to win the title twice since 2000.

The league then entered a period of uncertainty, marked by the abandonment of the 2018 campaign and the cancellation of the 2019/20 season.

Hearts of Oak emerged champions in 2020/21, while Kotoko responded by winning the 2021/22 title.

Since then, however, the championship has increasingly moved away from Accra and Kumasi.

Medeama won their first title in 2022/23, followed by FC Samartex in 2023/24 and Bibiani Gold Stars in 2024/25.

Medeama then reclaimed the trophy in 2025/26, winning their second league trophy in four years.
