The Ministry of Sports and Recreation has said that no evidence has been presented to show that Sports Minister Kofi Adams personally received money, commissions or other financial benefits from alleged irregularities surrounding the 2026 FIFA World Cup visa scandal that has rocked the country.

Adams has come under pressure in recent weeks, with the Minority in Parliament calling for his immediate dismissal and prosecution over his alleged involvement in the 2026 FIFA World Cup visa scandal.

The call follows concerns over the payment of approximately $623,000 in visa facilitation fees in connection with Ghana's arrangements for supporters and officials travelling to the tournament.

The Ministry made this known while responding to allegations concerning the facilitation of travel and visa applications for Ghanaians seeking to attend the tournament, which is being hosted across the United States of America, Mexico and Canada.

In a press statement, the Ministry said institutional correspondence relating to visa applications should not automatically be treated as evidence of personal financial gain by the minister.

“There is still no evidence before the public showing that the Minister collected US$8,000, US$9,000 or US$10,000 from any applicant, received a commission, instructed Mr Gyamfi to collect money, instructed TRIBE to collect money, personally created fictitious NSA positions or financially benefited from the alleged arrangements,” the statement said.

The Ministry acknowledged that there may have been wrongdoing involving aspects of the World Cup travel arrangements but insisted that responsibility must be established through evidence gathered from investigations.

It said allegations involving the National Sports Authority (NSA), the Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA), TRIBE Culture Fest and individuals linked to the arrangements should be investigated where necessary.

The statement added that anyone found to have collected money unlawfully, supplied false information or abused a public position should be held accountable.

Already, the Director-General of the National Sports Authority, Yam Ampofo Ankrah, has been suspended amid investigations into the matter.
