I was a kid then and at the stadium that night. Went with an Uncle. It was a historic event. The fight did not start till about 1.00 am. before a light drizzle. Before the fight the drums were beating nonstop about 30 minutes before both fighters entered the ring.

Lopez entered the arena first. He is native American, so he came into the ring wearing the traditional native American headgear. I guess that was his juju. It was Poison's turn to enter next. The drums and the cheering from the home crowd rose to a frenzy. It was like a chief was entering the arena, that's the type of following Poison had back then. That was when boxing was at its height. Poison was a fearsome puncher and looked more ripped than Lopez, Lopez looked slender but fit. Most people just sizing them up thought Poison would put him away quickly, but Lopez didn't look scared at all. He came ready to do battle. The US anthem played and then Ghana's anthem played and the drumming got even louder after it ended.

Poison was dominating the first few rounds, I would say 1 through 5 and opened a cut on Lopez eye. Lopez was bleeding badly but then from rd 5 on Lopez began to take over and it was back and forth from then. Lopez then opened a cut on Poison's eye too. Both men were bleeding profusely for the next couple of rounds. It was a bloody mess for both fighters but somehow Lopez's cut men were able to stop his bleeding, whereas Poison's bleeding continued. His cornermen could not stop the bleeding. As the fight went into the latter rounds Poison's energy began to fade and Lopez just maintained his energy and work rate till the last round. Lopez won. Many saw it as an upset but meany did not know that Lopez was actually one of the best featherweights ever even to this day. He was no push over. Poison lost to a legend. That was a fight for the history books although a sad day in Ghana's sporting history. I rank the disappointment in Ghana to Ghana's loss to Uruguay at the 2010 World Cup. Pepple were in tears leaving the stadium that day.
