Great coaches have pride, however it is just one out of several factors for success. One of the key factors is to base selection on the accomplishments of individual players and how it can be applied for maximum effect for each game. You cannot do this by picking players based on recommendation alone or based on which teams they play for but rather the final decision should be based on statistics on the accomplishments of each player. Numbers don't lie. A striker who has scored 10 goals in 10 appearances of course is better than another player who has scored 2 goals in 10 appearances in a comparable league. The only reason why you would not pick the former over the later would be because of fitness or other exigent reasons.
