Prince Kofi Amoabeng, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of UT Bank, says Ghana has failed in spite of the recognition of the country as an emerging economy.
He said “truly from what I have seen in the last 50 years I can truly say that Ghana is a failing state. Businesses are not being helped to flourish because of the lack of structure and infrastructural developments.”
He explained that Ghana’s economy has not been in the best shape in the past 50 years and businesses, which are the backbone of any successful economy, continue to be killed by those who have been at the helm over the years.
Mr. Amoabeng disclosed this while speaking on the topic “challenges facing private sector businesses in Ghana” at a forum held to celebrate the 1st anniversary of The Finder, a private newspaper set up by the former Managing Director of Graphic Communication Limited.
He noted that Ghana has not been able to realize its development potential because there is too much corruption and indiscipline in every sector, particularly the public service.
“Because of the structural breakdown, Ghanaians do not feel accountable to anyone and corruption has taken over every aspect of our economy,” he reiterated.
He said in spite of Ghana’s touted democratic credentials, the type of structures and systems that would make Ghana an economic success had not been delivered.
The UT Bank boss called for practical steps to be taken in order to create the enabling environment for businesses to thrive.
Mohammed Awal, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Marble Communications Group, publishes of The Finder, The Weekend Finder and Finder Sports, said the anniversary topic: “Strengthening State Institutions for Private Sector Development” was chosen to highlight the need for the state to play an active role in developing the private sector.
“The state must collaborate with the private sector to encourage development, he said, adding that The Finder was developed to complement journalism in national development and they were committed to producing credible, balance and development-oriented stories.
He announced that the company will next year come out with its business paper and an electronic media house.
Peter Jones, the British High Commissioner to Ghana, said Africa’s private sector had generated an estimated 70 percent of the continent’s output, approximately two-thirds of its investment and 90 percent of employment on the continent.
He added that based on these statistics offered by the African Union (AU), the creation and development of private sector job, is seen as one of the most effective and sustainable strategies for alleviating poverty in Africa.
He said Africa could reduce dependence on foreign aid if the private sector becomes dynamic.
Mr. Jones noted that challenges facing Ghana’s private sector such as high cost of utility, lack of access to information on external markets and inadequate physical infrastructure could be tackled if the sector is given the needed attention.

ghana this time also inched closer to selecting under 20 players and players with height unlike in the past where we select demunitive but old players. i doubt very much that the reserve goal keeper, richmond nketia, kennedy ashai, acheampong, boakye have not breached the 20 year old mark.

This game should have been the final game for the tournament. It was a tough match and I think the boys played well though the defense wasn't that good. Remember, we had our best defenders on suspension; our midfield general was on suspension as well and the main goalkeeper couldn't continue. This means three and a half regular players were not in the match. We practically played with four bench warmers and still came out with a little short.
Don't forget, Duncan was only brought to play defense for we had none left. He is not a defender so was usually caught off position. He did well since this is his first to be featured at defenders. His main position is defensive mid not central mid. However, when you observed his positions today, he was most of the time in the middle.
To me, Aboagie is a light weight therefore, could have released the balls a little faster. I recommend he lifts up metals during the off season to gain a little weight. He is smooth with possessions but his position demands a little strength to shield balls. His ball distribution is superb.
Frank Acheampong should be called to help Asamoah Gyan up front in the Black Stars. That young man is awesome in splitting opponents' defense and can hold onto possessions for teammates to join in attack. Asamoah Gyan would truly benefit from his inclusion in the Black Stars. Instead of Kwasi Appiah to call Jordan Ayew and or Richmond Boakyie Yiadom, I would prefer Frank Acheampong to be called ahead of them. The guy has skills and his ball handling looks more threatening than the two players I compared him to.
With a 4-4-2 formation, have Andrea Ayew at the right wing, Sulley Ali Muntari and Kedwo Asamoah in the middle, and have christian Atsu at the left wing. In front of these four left footers, have Asamoah Gyan at the right side whilst Frank Acheampong at the left side. With these players in the middle and up front, we could have school girls at defense and still would come out winners.

Look, Brazil may have had more possessions than its competitors in the tournament you mentioned, on the contrary, the end results were not totally based on their possession percentages. You are trying to make a point but that doesn't hole water with me for I argue with facts. Brazil's Confederation Cup wining was based on their tactical and technical superiority over their opponents. The mapping of how to approach each match, orchestrated by Scolari, was different. The way they played Italy at the group stage was different from the way they played Uruguay at the semi and Spain at the finals. They played Italy with a little hash as the beginning and slowed the game down in the second half. Against Uruguay, they played a little bit calm at the beginning and pressed on them at the second half. Unlike their final match against Spain, the Brazilians want all the way with aggressiveness from the beginning to the end. It was a strategical planning by the coach. The French were not good, they were poor (atleast in the secondhallf). Really we lost this game because of the defense. Ghana will do good to build a better defense and also teach players to play strong defense. Because they al want to forwarders because they know there is more money in it. Ghana really deserved to go to the finals..specially the forwarders did a splendid job..but if the defense start sleeping then you don't have any chance, not matter how many goals you make!!
