I am yet to see a team with a weak or undisciplined defense team win a tournament (in any team sport) at this level. This is why no African team has won this tournament, thus far.

For a national coach, and some blind people on this forum, to suggest the suicidal strategy of “the best form of defense is to attack,” tells me a whole lot about our so-called experts. Could you imagine using this strategy against teams like Germany, Argentina, Holland, Uruguay, France, and the rest?

Folks: This is the World Cup, not the “Charge of the Light Brigade of the Crimea War.” Now, I am convinced that we really need that technical director (black or white). This skipper would not be able to navigate the Ghana ship through the rough international waters all by himself. This is not navigating a dugout canoe down the Korle lagoon.

I like and admire AA. But, I believe, he may need some help in the world cup.

Let me break it down for you
1. The saying "the best form of defense is to attack" IS AN ADAGE
2. AA quoted this adage correctly
3. GH FUO came and said AA was wrong and quoted it the opposite way
4. I explained to GH FUO that he (GH FUO) has quoted it wrong and AA quoted it correctly
5. I am not suggesting the strategy, I am just saying "do not say the coach has said something wrong if he has actually quoted it correctly and you have quoted it wrong"

However, let us look at what AA was saying.
If you do not attack, you do not score. If one team scores 3 goals and the other scores 4, the team with 4 goals wins!. Any team that scores at least one goal more than the other, wins!
When you attack effectively, you put your opponents on the back foot. They are penned in their own half and cannot come out to attach you.
Sitting back to defend will not take you anywhere. It may get you nil-nil draws but will not win you matches. We went to Egypt yesterday to defend and ended up losing the game!
We see week in, week out in league games that teams that score 1 goal and try to defend it more often than not end up conceeding a goal.

The teams you mention (Germany, Argentina etc) are attacking teams, that is why they are successful. There is only one great team that relies effectively on a defensive strategy, and that is Italy. That is an exception to the rule.
Similarly, there is only one great manager who relies on a defensive strategy, Mourhino, again, an exception to the rule.
Ofcourse it is good to have a good defence. The team that has the highest overall marks in all three areas of the pitch (defence, midfield and attack) is likely to win more matches, however it is only by attacking that you can win matches. That is why Barca is always winning, you never see them sitting trying to defend against opponents.

So when AA says the best form of defense is to attack, he is not saying we should throw caution to the wind and throw all our players upfront and ignore the back. What he is saying is that Ghana is not going to sit back and play defensive football. You sit back, you invite pressure, you make mistakes, you give away free kicks in dangerous positions, you conceede goals (look at the free kick Egypt scored with yesterday). However, if you attack, you pile pressure on the opponents......THEY make the mistakes, YOU profit!!

Now here is my opinion.... I believe we went to Cairo to sit and make sure we do not conceede 5 goals. To me, that was a defensive strategy. In Kumasi, we went all out to score enough goals to have an advantage for the away game. I think we both know which strategy worked best (unless you want to say we played a defensive stra against Egypt in Kumasi).
Yes, the teams Agatagbe mentioned have SOLID defences, but they do not sit back and rely on that, they attack. If Germany can score 4 goals, they will score 4 goals. They will not score 1 goal and then try to defend it. Italy (and Mourhino teams) on the other hand will score 1 or 2 and then defend it to the end of the game. As I said, Italy, Mourhino exceptions to the rule.
Adama, let me also ask a question. Assume there is a war. Can you defend your people effectively by sitting and waiting for the other country to come and bomb you then you try to deflect the bomb? or will it be more effectively to defend your people by going out to attack the other country in their backyard?

Now, the simple answer to your intelligent question is this: It would depend on the makeup of the enemy forces. For instance, if we are faced with overwhelming force, I may retreat. Agatebe used a famous battle to illustrate a point and I am going to do the same here.

In the Battle of Thermopylae, the 300 Spartans were faced with overwhelming force of probably half a million Persians who boasted that even their arrows alone could blot the sunshine. But the Spartans made a stand at a strategic pass, which was the only way they could prevent the Persians from reaching the rest of the Greek army and destroy the people. Well, you know the rest of the story. 300 Spartans almost defeated the most powerful army in the world at that time, until their defensive stand was breached by a traitor.

So, it really depends on the resources of the enemy. But, I must confess to you that I am a youth soccer coach with defensive soccer mentality. So, I may be a little bias toward more defensive, as opposed to offensive, strategies in sport.

In modern history, I would say America has caused more damage and casualties to Iraq and Afghanistan by going out to bomb them in their background than waiting for them to come to American soil. So was the Spartan battle an exception to the rule?

However, let us switch back to football. Please do not misunderstand what I am saying. I am not saying that defending is not necessary. That would be silly. That would be like saying we should not have a goalkeeper but instead have 11 attackers on the pitch! I agree it is good to have a SOLID defence. But having a solid defence does not mean you should sit in your half and absorb pressure. Have the solid defenders to rely on, but put the pressure on the opponents.
If you watch rugby union, you will see that one of the most important stats is territory. A team that keeps the opposition penned in their own half (therefore dominates on territory) is expected to win. In rugby union (and even rugby league) commentators and pundits will be SURPRISED if you dominate territory but lose the game.

Coming to the Black Stars defence in particular, I do not think you can blame AA if you think the Black stars defence is porous. AA has picked the BEST defenders available in Ghana and that is what he has to work with. People will say, yeah, he should have picked this guy, and he should have picked that guy, but honestly one or two players here or there will not make a huge difference to the team. We saw this recently. In the first leg, people complained that Inkoom should not have played. In the second leg, he was replaced by Harrison Afful. However, the inclusion of Harrison Afful did not make a massive change to the team. The coach has to work with the players he has....if they are not good enough (in some peoples opinion), thats not the coaches fault. Yeah, you may say defensive strategy, but remember these guys are professionals and should be able to hit the ground running. AA does not spend week in week out with them, he only has a few weeks at a time to train with them, so the players have to take some responsibility. I am pretty sure AA does not tell the defenders to go on the pitch and run to the front and stay there? If the players are unable to read the changing ebb and flow of the game then thats not the coaches fault.

Finally, the Black stars do not (in my opinion) even have the resources to effectively deploy a defensive strategy, which in my opinion is counter-attack. You would need players as quick as Theo Walcott, Andros Townsend, Gareth Bale, Christiano Ronaldo to effectively catch opponents on the break. The players in the Black stars currently do not have
1. the speed
2. the movement off the ball
3. the decision making to lay the ball off to someone in a better postion to score a goal. We are still selfish and want to score ourselves for the glory eg. Ghana's second goal in Kumasi, Essien was trying to score himself and we ended up with a lucky deflection to get the own goal..... Gyans second goal, Muntari was trying to score himself with a spectacular bicycle kick which went wrong, but ended up at the head of Gyan for him to score whereas a better decision making process would have been to realise that we had men in a crowded penalty box and therefore head the ball across the face of goal? Anyway, it resulted in a goal so why am I complaining?!

He tells the Stars to attack and keep the opponents out of our half, yet he is spinning Appiah to have said all we have to do is to attack and forget defence.

However, it is time to move on. Let me say it again, we need a person who understands the techniques of the game. I am afraid Appiah is not the one, though he has a very important role to play in the team. He is a manager, but that does not prevent us from benefiting from a person higher in experience than Appiah. Think again GFA. The way we played yesterday was a testimony, even though Appiah claims it was the strategy.

I like your self belief but, with humility....you remind me of 'a lamb with a lion heart'. Yes! You can shock the world only if your players are in the same frame of mind as you and most importantly, the referees are not as biased as always.
