In my opinion, the issue is long overdue and must be addressed. So long as one is capable and performing, they are hailed, but when an incident happens, (injury)then that is all. I am an ex-footballer, (Tema Hurricanes, Accra Great Olympics, Swedru All Blacks, GTMC FC Tema, ex-captain) before I left the shores of Ghana to study in Europe. I do understand the anger of Nana Agyemang Gyau, and the only solution is to create an NGO to cater for the wellfare of ex-footballers. I have already started by requesting for addresses and telephone number data in Greater Accra for ex-footballers resident in Greater Accra, and will extend the project to other regions through my contacts with some ex-footballers especially those within the period of 1954-1974 to start with, and only involved in the Ghana Premier League. We shall get there.

How often do we honour our teachers, policemen/women, soldiers, medical doctors, etc., etc. May be there is reason why the FA did not show up, so, until he finds out, Agyeman should please tone it down.

True, that Ghana and all nations have heroes in all kinds of professions. Here, what Nana Agyemang Gyau was demanding was from a SPECIFIC INSTITUTION—the Ghana Football Association (GFA).

If old soldiers, who fought in say World War II or who served as Peace Keepers, etc., were holding a HISTORIC meeting —then I think some military officials should be present to honor them. So, for the good old footballers, I think the GFA should have been represented by one or two or three officials—if it was invited—and not necessarily by the boss, K. Nyantakyi, but by some low level officials. Who cares what ranks they have, anyway??

Similarly, if the Ghana Medical Association or good old Teachers Association were to hold a HISTORIC meeting, then I think some representatives of the Ghana Medical Association (GMA) or Teachers Association (GNAT) should be there to grace the occasion. I don't think the old footballers association was asking for too much. They just wanted "acceptance, recognition, respect, to be celebrated and a THANK YOU handshake from the GFA." Make no mistakes, folks: THEY PLAYED THEIR HEARTS OUT FOR THE NATION!!

Human beings, normally, get high and satisfied from the little—little things that others do unto them, but significantly, they need some doggone RECOGNITION—SO, JUST CHEER THOSE OLD FOLKS UP!!

These guys were paid PEANUTS as compared to today’s players. They didn't accumulate any wealth (several are very poor now) and can't even have some low level GFA official to appear at their meeting? It’s a damn shame!!

There is a saying that "a great nation is the one which takes good care of its older and younger citizens”, but this backward behavior by GFA is not only appalling, but also monumentally disrespectful. Well, those GFA officials will also get older and will no longer work at GFA offices—and we shall see!!

Are you by any chance aware that, in spite of workers gainful pay that goes to commensurate with the toils of their hard labour over the years gets bonuses and meritorious awards, end of year parties fully footed by various establishments at the turn of every year until they are retired?

If your answer to the above is yes, then you must bow down in shame when you said players are fully paid so they don't need such things as housing, compensation, soft loans and whatever situation they find themselves years after they have retired from active footballing.

The only time I would agree with you
in this connection is to suggest to us that, footballers must be taxed/ and or must form a very strong union that could levy some form of taxes on their earnings for the rainy day. They must also invest their monies in a profitable ventures to cater for those 'bad days'

Consequently, the old players of yesteryears, referring to those who gave us the three trophies have had bouts of regrets when they hear current "nothing could be players" being paid bonuses in thousands of dollars, not to talk about the fringe benefits they enjoy during camping yet haven brought home nothing.

It hurts to turn these thoughts in the mind thinking something fruitful can emerge but nothing forth coming from the government of the day.

One would ask whether Ghana is worth dying for?
Of course yes. On Ghana's platform such greats like Agyeman Gyau, Dan Owusu, Akwasi Owusu had emerged. Names have become a household materials/worldly acclaimed.
Being a GBstar had given you guys the coveted identity world over.
Unlike me, hard as I tried my name remains in my house only.It does not transcend the shores of Ghana.
Robert Mensah and Baba Yara are now monumental so why won't you die a little for MotherGhana?.
