If this guy had any good intentions, he would have spruced up the moribund colt system and revamped it, whilst replicating it across all the regions in the image of Winneba Sports College. After all, countries that invested in their youth academies reaped better dividends.

The US football Federation’s World Cup budget for Brazil is listed at US$2 million although the amount may increase.

Algeria has proposed US$5.8 million; One million of the mount will come from sponsorship.

Belgium on December 12 announced an allocation of €4.5 million for the national team for Brazil 2014.

Apparently the Nigerian Sports Minister is in hot waters for presenting a budget of $9.5m. Poor Ghana’s is reportedly earmarking a whopping $19.5m! The question is “What for?” Based on the proposed budgets of economically rich and developed Belgium and oil rich Algeria, I have done estimates of what I believe should be Ghana’s commitment for Team Ghana Brazil 2014.

(These figures have been based on the fact that all officials involved would be paid their full emoluments while they are away in Brazil, while the state takes care of ALL their expenses in Brazil)

I have actually built in some redundancies, even though Ghana’s economy is in such dire straits that teachers, doctors, university lecturers and others have been in constant agitation for improved salaries and other service conditions. The age old teacher training allowances that have enabled a large number of people from very humble backgrounds to gain access to higher education have been withdrawn. Large numbers of children attend classes under trees, while others attend classes in dilapidated mud brick classrooms, with yet more children attending classes in what can be generously described as unsafe buildings or death traps. Large numbers of our compatriots are being sent to their early graves by preventable and treatable diseases like malaria, typhoid fever, hooping cough, and now Ghana apparently has been found to top the world in glaucoma cases.

Under these circumstances, it will be foolish, in fact criminal, to spend more than $5m on what can truly be called an ego trip to Brazil 2014. I have been musing about the Africa Watch designation of Ghana as “Republic of Corruption.” In all honesty, if we spend more than $5m on this exercise, it will be difficult for anybody, including the unthinking spin doctors, to refute that “new branding” of our dear country.

On a personal note, if Parliament, the Presidency or even a national referendum approves anything more than $5m for Brazil 2014, I shall take a second mortgage on my house and pay my cocoa farming relatives in the Western Region, and there are quite a number of them, to either smuggle their main 2014 cocoa season produce across the border to sell in the Ivory Coast or simply leave them to rot on the trees, in protest. The corruption or sheer stupidity in national affairs ought to stop. It is getting too much!

Anyway, I don't see any defense in the article. Defende means providing figures in cost to justify that colosal amount not mere whims and caprices. You ain't fooling nobody. Your time will definately come.
