There was a time. There was a time when RTU was one of the potent teams in Ghana the "whole the whole". They travelled across the country from North to South, from East to west, from Tamale to Kumasi,to Accra, Ho, Sekondi-Takoradi and more beating team after team after team.

That famous RTU team fielded amazingly skilled players such as Mohammed Choo, Mahama Nlai, Baba Killer, Kwame Danger, Musah States, and the young maetro Adedi Pele. They played attacking soccer with razzle-dazzle flair.

After a few years, the guns went silent and the team disintegrated. Then Accra Hearts of Oak came for Mahama Nlai. The team never regained that fearless and fearsome status again. Never. But they will rise again.

One of the major factors making the present Ghana league weak and weaker is the fact that players like Waris don't play in the local league before they go abroad. I grew up in the 70s in takoradi supporting hasaacas. GBC TV used to show european and brazilian leagues on sundays and yet, we went to gyandu park to watch our local league...matches involving home teams - hasaacas and wise and against teams like kotoko, hearts, olympics and most matches were well attended...reason was that the players were not mediocre like now...and that was even the reason why ghana clubs went far in club competitions-finals or semi finals-always...hasaacas won wafu cup and reached semi finals in africa club championship...waris is a good player but the fact that he never played in our local league before going pro is a disservice to ghana football...i have always said, and will continue to urge the ghana fa to make a rule that will require every player to play in the local league for at least two years before embarking on a pro career...Kotoko used to be the best but no more...they were when they had the players who took the team to win africa club championships twice from about six finals...kotoko now is living on their old fame that is the reason why they were eliminated by first timers from liberia in the club championships...in fact, it was the first time a liberian club has eliminated a ghanaian club from a competition...that doesnt make them the best...presently, ghana's best players-asamoah gyan, kwadwo asamoah, sulley muntari, waris mohammed, and many others never played for kotoko or hearts- the two famous teams in ghana...all i want to say is that the gfa must come out with a rule, that, before a player gets his international transfer certificate (itc), he must have played in the local league for a minimum of two years...Its ridiculous that these days ghanaians prefer watching european leagues on tv weekends to watching ghana league...and its even annoying that ghana radio stations run live commentaries on european leagues.
