When I read stories like DK's I get angry about the wickedness of people who shamelessly take advantage of the vulnerable. I wish I were in a position to right such wrongs.

Just consider government recognizing the fact that the 3 Northern Regions of Ghana need special attention to enable them catch up with the rest of the country, in terms of development. Government entrusts this noble idea (in the form SADA) into the hands of highly placed indigenes (who should empathize with their own people). And, what did we hear? These highly placed indigenes constitute themselves into consultants and charge monthly consultants' fees, some nearly GHC20,000.00, the least a little less than GHC10,000.00. These people gleefully withdraw these monies belonging to their OWN POOR people, without any thought about the plight of their people. WHAT A SHAME AND WICKEDNESS!

It was the same in the case of DK. A stark illiterate from a very poor home fights his way to the top and makes money. Then some educated and highly placed persons assigned to assist him manage his affairs, decided to STEAL from him, because he could not read, nor had adequate knowledge about how to manage his finances.

I suggest that well-meaning individuals, especially lawyers, take up this matter and get DK his monies paid back to him. Much importantly, if it is established that the $45,000 was used for the state NOTHING SHOULD STOP THE GOVERNMENT FROM RE-PAYING THE MONIES, WITH INTERESTS TO DATE. If the monies were not used by the state and for the state, then the individuals, like one Sintim Asante, mentioned by a contributor to this post, must be put before court for stealing.

WE CAN'T KILL THE SPIRIT OF PROGRESS IN OUR PEOPLE WITH THIS TYPE OF GREED.

David Kotey Poison was paid the cedi equivalent of his purse in 1976 from the fight with Fuku Yama of Japan by the Kutu Acheampong administration.

In appreciation of his gallantry and heroism, the Kutu Acheampong dictatorship gave D.K.Poison an estate house at Teshie-Nungua for free.

D.K.Poison mismanaged his finances and has himself to blame.

Papa Appiah or whatever he calls himself and others who are not abreast with facts, should not try to rewrite history with distorted rumours to solicit sympathy for D.K.Poison.

Great Ghanaian amateur sportsmen who sacrificed their lives to put Ghana on the sporting map never got even a boys quarter from the state and D.K.Poison should be grateful for getting a free estate house at Teshie-Nungua from the state even though he never paid taxes on his earnings, and stop blackmailing the state.

General Ignatius Kutu Acheampong built him a house. Kutu would have paid him back if Major General Neville Alexander Odartey-Wellington's coup d'etat which led to the creation of SMC II. There is record somewhere that a Government of Ghana can refer to and pay him his money. You have to remember those days everything had to go through Procurement and importation of mackerel was only done by the Government. Some of the money was also used to import rice all these goods were consider as an essential commodity and there were a SMC degree called Essential Commodities which list all items consider to be essential commodity. I do not want to sound negative but if D.K. Poison happened to come from a different part of Ghana where most of the so-called ruling class come from he would have been paid. An ungrateful country.

As a matter of interest, rumour was rife in Ghana at the time that he was rewarded by the government with a house.If this was true, did they then made him pay for it indirectly by using part of his winnings to import fish into the country as you asserted.
Although he has no docunmentary evidence to back his claim, i have read from a contributor of this column that there is a person alive today who was privy to what happened.
Papa Appiah,is there any reason why DK cannotask the Court to invite this person to substantiate or refute this allegation?
I support some of the recommendations you have put forward and would ask that you continue, with assistance from readers of your piece to force a change in favour of this great man.I'll walk the walk with you to get justice for this man.

We were at Temasco at that time and were ordered by the soldiers to the port to help off load the contingent plus another shipload of fertilizers which had been caught in the rains at the port and were about to melt onto trucks destined for the various regions for distribution. I think that was the first consignment of mackerel with the red label to enter the country- Star-Kist- I guess was the name. You see 45K was very big money at that time when a round trip to Europe was between 300 - 600 cedis.
I guess it would be appropriate if the state will be generous enough to "compensate" DK with the current value of the amount plus accrued interest. That definitely will be running into some millions of cedis which might help him out of the present predicament. He is a national hero and should be worth more than that, considering all the bogus judgement debts being dished out to some unscrupulous individuals who never did a f***** thing for the nation.

Those were hard days but DK was among the well-offs.

He sure needs help but he must first stop lying. DK fought way after his win over Fukuyama. I remember he even fought the Nigerian lightweight champion and got knocked out silly. In all those years he never raised the issue of "where is my money" till lately.

DK you know you are lying. Successive governments including JJs knew he was lying. Well if he is owed that much money and people are getting free judgment debts courtesy of Mahama then he must get a good lawyer. He will become a fucking millionaire very soon.
