His haste in awarding such a controversial penalty definitely was for a reason. His intention was to please the host nation to calm all the tension in Brazil.
Probably Fifa could have instructed him to take the slightest opportunity to award a penalty and also make sure that it goes in favour of Brazil.

It was the first goal - it was offside. As you say, after keeping the score at nil-nil for a long time, we were cheated and that led to our heads going down and allowed Brasil to capitalize and score 2 more.

I watched the game on ESPN and saw the Penalty as a just one. The decision was correct, even though I recognize how many other Referees would have ignored the infringement.
What possibly drove the Referee to be so unforgiven with that Penalty might have been a series of consecutive rough tackling by the Croatian side that he had ignored and the Brazilian Players had been complaining about up to that point.
The Croatian Team was undoubtedly splendid and had the better chances to beat Brazil. The first twenty (20) Minutes of the second half saw the Brazilians flat-footed and seemingly aloof. But the Croatians did not make the best out of that dispirited show by the Brazilians. At least, three(3) crosses by the Croatians should have produced goals in that period.
As the game progressed, the Crostian Defense began showing some fatigue and allowing a few easy runs by the Brazilians whose Defense had resorted to long lobbying from the back to the Croatian's third of the Field. Such was what produced the Penalty. The Croatian Defender falling behind Fred of Brazil's Team grabbed the Brazilian around the top of his shoulders to pull him back from advancing. The Croatian did it so quickly that only those paying close attention and those nearby, like the Referee was, could have seen the foul.
I have seen many Defenders use that quick, momentary shoulder-pull a lot and gotten away with it when they are at close quarters from an Attacker that is breaking away.
So, the Referee must not be vilified but rather commended for being that keen to catch the foul.
It was just unfortunate the Croatians missed that opportunity to get a Historic win. But such is Soccer at World Cup. It is always full of shocks and disappointments. If they play as they did in their subsequent games, the Croatians will hopefully emerge successful into the next round.
We must acknowledge also that both the Brazilian equalizer by Neymar and that by Oscar to seal their side's victory were spectacular shots that most keepers could not save. I had anticipated that David Luiz would be the most likely to concede the goal Marcelo made against his own side under pressure. The former has the tendency to make those mistakes. He did cause Chelsea quite a number of those goals or Penalties leading to goals against his side in the Barclays Premier League. In fact, he made a similar mistake that only luckily occurred a little outside the Goal area to cause a Corner-Kick instead.
If Brazil keeps playing at that level, I seriously believe they would have it much tougher to win the World Cup.
Kudos, Brazil! Well played, Croatia!!
