As a player, I would rather go home with a medal, which I can show to my children and grand children in years to come. It may mean nothing to Netherlands or other big teams that consistently perform well, but if players from a country such as Ghana or Costa Rica manage to get the 3rd place medal from a one-time good performance, they will cherish it.
The 4th place team should be given small shields for their participation.
