I wish Michael Essien could successfully make this spell with Panathinaikos his last lap towards retirement. He should see and prepare himself to come home to rest. That would be a fitting retirement after a long career in Soccer. He must ensure whatever he earns from this Team solidly secures his future financial life for a long retirement. He may have been too old to continue on in Soccer after Panathinaikos, but too young to idle around, even in overflowing Cash, for the much longer part of his life ahead. He should make the best of investments out of his deal with Panathinaikos. If he has not already done so, he must find creditable Financial Management Firm or Consultancy to handle his investments and not allow peers only tell him what he could do with his money. Peers' suggestions help only when they are doing very well themselves in any investments they introduce to you.
Moreover, Essien can still go back to School to gain more knowledge with which to manage his finances best. Many Sportsmen and Sportswomen sadly blow away their wealth before they turn 60. But today, people live way much longer past 60, so Essien must aim to maintain his good life to last a long life. His wealth must outlast his lifespan so that his children can continue to benefit from his toils. A lasting financial legacy for the offspring of Athletes is rare in Ghana but not impossible. Such is an opportunity for all our Athletes sweating it out overseas to build that legacy for their posterity.
He should let his maturity seep through all he does from this point. And he must try to keep his marriage to the very end, or it could cost him a lot in Wealth. Many eventual drift into poverty by men Athletes come from bitter divorces. Some of our Women just go in for the 'kill'--that is, they go into marriage with the Sports Celebrities for their money. Many are very shrewd and could fake humility and poise for quite a while. Then, all of a sudden, they turn around to take little things the men might have always taken for granted more seriously than needed. Such areas to watch is other women. Flirtations are common with the Atletes, especially, the men, while they are actively playing their Sports and making money, but if their women do not take offense at such liberties immediately, it does not mean they would not do so later on. Some wait till the offending men are out of Hiring, or close to retiring, then capitalize on such long overlooked weaknesses to demand divorce at a costly price. Showing off the highest-end products acquired is often a competitive game among peers of well-paid Athletes outside the Field or Court. Along with that goes the idea that they should live big and famous all the time and outspend their peers. The adage 'Life should not be an endless competition' holds for all. And living the moment is an excuse to squander what people have spent their lives working for. One could live luxuriously but wisely to preserve one's lifestyle and wealth beyond a long life on Earth. So, I wish Essien and other lucky successful Ghanaian Athletes take note of that.
Strong Financial Legacies are not common among us. But it is high time we all began to build some for our posterity. The more Ghanaians are able to do so, the less we would have to be depending upon the Government for all the bulk of our social and economic infrastructure.
I would wish to see the Essiens, Muntaris, Prince Boatengs and the Ayews invest in real lasting properties like hefty shares in enduring Companies, or build their own Manufacturing firms, or take to Real Estate Development. Those are some of the lasting edifices that serve as lasting testimonies to their success. Furthermore, if they could do so and not even do much of philanthropy, which I wish they would do, their Companies would provide good employment to many of our Youths, and the Nation would all be grateful for that contribution, as well.
I wish Essien the best with Panathinaikos. He can and must play his best of Soccer yet to crown his long, gainful career that would forever inspire many of our young also.
Long Live Ghana!!!
