Hearts used to employ such dubious Juju rituals to help them win games, too. A few of my friends and I personally witnessed an incident in the 70s at the then School of Forestry, Sunyani, where Hearts had come to rest before their game with Brong Ahafo United.

The incident involved two top Officials of the Team, Nyametei and Djaba. They and a few members of their traveling group had walked down to the base of the stairs in the newly extended Office Building at the School. The Team had been assigned that Building exclusively, and Students were not supposed to enter it.

As Students often do, however, we had been very curious and enthused about the presence of Hearts on our Campus. The whole School knew about Hearts camping on site. And, the impending game had picked up a frantic debate of its own among the Student population as to who might win that game.

So, some of us kept snooping around the Team to catch glimpses of the Players whenever we could.

It was during such prowling that my friends and I happened to see Mr. Nyametei and company walk down and hide behind the stairs. Looking through a partially closed Glass Window, we saw this group standing and squatting in a circle, and one of them in a white 'Mallam' robe tossing a number of split Cola nuts.

We shockingly but very quietly observed the scene to the end. It just happened that after tossing the Cola nuts three times or so, the group appeared unhappy, and Mr. Nyametei kept shaking his head like something was wrong.

At that point, we began to move away from the window. Then, one of my friends screamed that Hearts didn't seem to have a chance. Immediately, we all ran away from the area. When we had safely returned to our Dormitory's balcony, we saw some of the men who were at the Stairwell tossing the Cola nuts come out of the Building and scanning around the area, ostensibly trying to figure out who might have seen them doing so.

It just happened that Hearts lost that game by two goals to nil, too. It was a very Cloudy day with light rain beginning shortly before the game, and many thought the game would be canceled but the rain abated early enough for the Game to run to the end.

When the Hearts Team returned to the School of Forestry to prepare their return trip back to base in Accra, the story of their Juju ritual had spread around the Campus and a huge crowd of Students had gathered at the nearest Dormitory to see the Team's reaction to their defeat. Some of the Students began to tease the Team, saying aloud that the tossing of the Cola nuts could not save them, and the Team had to think differently next time. Some of the Team's Officials seemed visibly furious that the Students were aware of the Team's Juju ritual, and kept flagging them off.

So, yes, Hearts has also dealt in Juju before. Whether it works or not is another thing. The tradition with Teams don't easily fade away. Therefore, there is the likelihood that Hearts still use Juju, too. I would be surprised it they do not do so now.

Meanwhile, I personally do not believe that Juju or Prayers necessarily influence the outcome of a game. They might only psychologically organize the mind-frame of the players towards winning or losing.

In this day and age, Ghanaians ought to know that it is sheer waste of time and resources to keep such beliefs. People have to be pragmatic enough to acknowledge only hard work and good management lead to winning games, or passing Exams, or getting good jobs.

And I was relieved to see that so many people have already said the things I would have said. However, what incensed me most was David Boateng calling some of the writers dogs and animals. After David saying the things he'd said and calling others dogs and animals is just a laugh. It shows the mentality of this guy. It seems to me that in Ghana it's all about how much money you have rather brains and experience which wins one a position in high places, even in churches.
