The local athletes' failure to so far meet qualifying standards for the Olympic Games is indicative of the lack of coaching and facilities in the country. The foreign-based athletes have availed themselves to better facilities and superb coaching to gain qualifying marks. Besides enrolling its promising athletes in junior colleges in the US, the country's athletic governing body, it appears, does not have any plans in place to ensure it athletes, whether local or foreign-based qualify for the Olympics. The Jamaicans are a force to be reckoned with in track and field because of their strong five-year planning. Most of their top-flight track and field athletes are home-grown, eschewing the practice of countries like Ghana, sending their athletes to study and train in the US. If a small country like Jamaican can do wonders in track and field, why can't Ghana do the same?

For your information most of Jamaica's national teams in the last few years have mostly been made up of athletes who are or were students in the US. Bolt, Asafa, Blake, Weir, SAFP are the exceptions. If you don't believe it, ... read full comment

If you don't believe it, go look at their full rosters. Jamaica may be small but athletics is their national sport. Come back and make your posts after Ghana starts spending same amount on athletics as it does on football.

What I stated was that most of their top-fight track and field athletes did not enroll and train at US schools, but rather stayed at home. That means a small country like Jamaica has the facilities and coaches to churn out world-class athletes. The Jamaican athletes who go the the US,attend NCAA Division 1 schools, unlike the Ghanaian athletes who are enrolled in junior colleges. NCAA Division 1 offers fierce competition than the junior colleges.
