First thing is that pundits have put Senegal on the pedestal bigging them up as the best team in the tournament. Wrong, yes they are a good team and Mane is an excellent player. But that's all they are, a good team. They are not as good as pundits said they are. It showed yesterday. Second thing is that the coach made the fundamental mistake of choosing Mane to be one of the spot kick takers. Bad mistake. Those that have studied the game will tell you never to elect your star player to take penalties in a shootout. They almost always miss. Brazil's Socrates in the World Cup Finals, Ronaldinho, oh and Djan not too long ago just to mention a few. Reason may be that these star players are already under immense pressure to carry the hopes of their teams and nations. To add the responsibility of converting a spot kick to that is just criminally negligent. Well, Senegal found out yesterday.

Gyan did not miss in a penalty shootout! He missed the penalty at overtime (before shootout). That's why there was a shootout in the first place. As matter of fact, he scored in the penalty shootout after that miss!

Thank you. Santa Claus' analysis is faulty. If your star is good at penalties, why leave him out? Usually they even take the first penalty.

Please let us know the years Socrates and Ronaldinho missed their penalties? Your arguement is not cogent. Ronaldo was Brazil's hero and he always took part in playing penalies. Please answer my question.

Brother, your argument is flawed. Anyone can miss a penalty during a shootout, and any team can lose a game through a shootout; irrespective of form or statire.
