His thinking and actions are swayed by public opinion. He may be just dumb too. Smart people don't take a path that every evidence shows it's a deadend. Well, he'll soon learn his lesson that local players aren't ready for world cup standard football.

Each player needs to know they get selected because their particular skills are needed for a particular game and that when they are not selected, it is not because they are not good enough. Each player brings something to the table and they must be made to feel important even when they are not selected for a particular game.

My point is simple: when you build a team, you don't encourage them to compete against each other. That is how divisions arise. If Kwashie thinks his friend, Komla, is a better player, he will be demoralized to see another player fielded instead of Komla. If Kwashie understands that the reason Komla is not fielded is not because he is not a good player but because the strategy of the opposition demands another player, there will be trust.

The selection to any national team is competitive. It has been like that since soccer began and will continue to be like that till the end of time. It is a "secret" that most coaches, for the sake of building team work, often pretend is not the case. Let the players keep that secret at the backs of their mind. As the coach, you need to play it down in order to ensure team work. Many players in the past have resorted to tricks and scheming in order to destroy their own team mates in order to be featured. Anthony Yeboah recently came out to talk about how the Black Stars became divided because he was not given the captain's arm band in Senegal '92. It's because those players who liked him thought it was a "competition" and that, since Tony Yeboah was not given the captain's band, the GFA was indirectly saying he wasn't good enough.

The Plan "A" is team building and competition is disguise. And Plan "B" is Compete for a spot in national team building. This time no more disguise but plain talk.
