An IT specialist and Chief Executive Officer of Soft Masters, Dr Ben Adu, has indicated that the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) is missing the point with the introduction of the new biometric driver’s licence.

The DVLA has indicated that beginning July 18, 2017, it will start issuing new biometric driver’s licences.

The introduction of this new licence, according to DVLA boss Kwesi Agyeman Busia, is aimed at eliminating fake licences and middlemen from the system.

He explained that the new card will have enhanced security features which will make it difficult for miscreants to issue fake ones.

The new licence will contain a chip loaded with the holder’s biometric details.

“This will ensure that people who have made duplication an industry will have it extra difficult to duplicate the licences. It will be practically impossible as it will have enhanced security,” Mr Busia told reporters.

However, Dr Adu believes that the core issues that result in the issuance of fake licences by middlemen have to been dealt with even with the introduction of the biometric licence.

For this reason, the DVLA, he said, must focus on dealing with the critical factors leading to the issuance of fake licences.

Speaking to Class News on Thursday June 8, he said: “From my point of view the DVLA is missing the point altogether. The problem is not with the card.

“The problem is with all the activities that come before the card is issued.”
