Ghana Statistical Service gets new home to strengthen data production

The Government Statistician, Dr Alhassan Iddrisu, has announced that the Ministry of Finance has formally handed over its former headquarters to the Ghana Statistical Service (GSS), a move expected to expand the agency's capacity to produce timely and accurate economic data for national development.

In a post shared on his X page on Wednesday, July 15, 2026, Dr Iddrisu said the handover, personally conducted by the Minister for Finance, Dr. Cassiel Ato Baah Forson, marks a significant investment in Ghana's statistical system and demonstrates the government's commitment to strengthening evidence-based policymaking.

"The Ministry of Finance handed us the keys. There's a story in those keys," Dr Iddrisu wrote, explaining that the building originally belonged to the Statistical Service before serving as the Finance Ministry's headquarters for more than five decades.

According to him, the Finance Minister's personal involvement in handing over the facility underscored the importance the government places on the work of the Statistical Service.

"Ministers do not often turn up in person to hand over keys. But you have. And that tells us something," he stated, thanking Dr Forson for what he described as a gesture that goes beyond transferring a building.

Dr Iddrisu said the additional office space will enable the Statistical Service to expand its operations and improve the production of official national statistics that inform economic planning and policy decisions.

"Here's what this means in plain terms: more room for our people, more room for the work, better numbers for Ghana," he said.

He disclosed that the Ministry of Finance expects the Statistical Service to deliver key statistical reforms, including a rebased Consumer Price Index (CPI) that reflects current household spending patterns, a rebased Gross Domestic Product (GDP) that captures the true size of the economy, and comprehensive employment statistics that provide a clearer picture of Ghana's labour market.

"The Minister was clear about what he expects in return, and so are we: a rebased Consumer Price Index, a rebased GDP, and employment statistics that show who is working, who isn't, and where the jobs are. That is the deal. A building for the truth. We accept," Dr Iddrisu noted.

Expressing appreciation to the Ministry of Finance, the Government Statistician said the significance of the handover lies not only in the physical infrastructure but also in the confidence it places in Ghana's national statistical system.

"My thanks to the Minister and the Ministry of Finance, not for the walls, but for what the gesture says: that Ghana's numbers matter enough to invest in. Every good decision this country makes starts with a good number. That is our job. Now we have the room to do it," he concluded.
