A suspected key figure in the ongoing chieftaincy dispute in Akwapim-Akropong has been shot dead following a prolonged gun battle with police, as authorities intensify efforts to restore order after recent clashes.

The incident occurred in the early hours of Friday, April 10, 2026, when a joint police team from the Eastern Regional Police Intelligence Directorate (PID) and the National Headquarters PID carried out an operation to arrest individuals captured in viral videos linked to violent disturbances during the Awukudae celebration on April 8.

According to police, "officers stormed a residence on Akuffo Road in search of a suspect identified as Kwasi Ansah Eku, also known as Dragon, who had been seen actively participating in the clashes.

"The suspect, described as one-armed, reportedly refused to surrender after police announced their presence and called on him to exit the room."

Police say the situation quickly escalated when the suspect opened fire on officers, prompting a return of fire.

A third individual, Elvis Adjei, 19, was also arrested for allegedly obstructing police during the operation.

All three suspects have been transferred to Koforidua to assist with ongoing investigations.

Police further disclosed that a pump-action shotgun, along with several spent and live AA cartridges, was retrieved from the deceased suspect.
