Police arrest six suspected members of highway robbery gang

The Ghana Police Service has arrested six suspects in connection with a highway robbery at Portor in the Bono East Region.

According to the Police, the operation also led to the recovery of the entire amount of money allegedly stolen during the robbery.

In a statement issued on July 21, 2026, the Police said, "On 19th July, 2026, at about 2030 hours, Police personnel on duty at the Portor Police Barrier under the Kintampo Police Division received intelligence that a robbery was in progress a few metres away from the barrier on the Portor-Gurumpe Highway.

"A team of Police personnel swiftly responded and proceeded to the robbery scene. Upon arrival, about four suspects fled into the bush. However, the team arrested Abdul Sadat Ali, 24, the driver of a Toyota Voxy with registration number AS 1541-25.

"During preliminary interrogation, the driver identified Samad Issahaka, 24, the driver of a Kia Rhino with registration number AS 7337-23, as a member of the robbery gang. Police subsequently arrested him."

Further investigations revealed that Yahaya Seidu, 35, the owner of the Kia Rhino, had instructed his driver to transport him to Buipe to purchase cattle.

According to the Police, the driver, knowing his employer was carrying a large sum of money, allegedly conspired with five others to rob him.

The statement said the suspects, armed with a toy pistol, trailed the Kia Rhino and its occupants from Offinso in the Ashanti Region. They reportedly intercepted the vehicle shortly after it passed the Portor Police Barrier and robbed the occupants of GH¢300,000 in cash.

The Police added that personnel from the Counter Terrorism Unit, together with the local Police Patrol Team, pursued the fleeing suspects into the bush and arrested four additional suspects: Abdul Rahman Mashud, 21; Asigri Avoka, 25; Awini Stephen, 19; and Faisal Salifu, 26.

A search conducted on the suspects led to the recovery of the full GH¢300,000 allegedly stolen from the victims.

According to the Police, the suspects admitted during interrogation that they had trailed the Kia Rhino from Offinso after receiving information from Samad Issahaka about the money being transported.

All six suspects have been detained and are assisting the Police with ongoing investigations.
