Well said. I cant believe he made such a stupid comment. The sentences meted out to the poor man on the street compared to what we see being handled to serious crimes conducted by the stealers is just bad.

It's the same as the racism in Europe and throughout Western countries where they classify minorities as less than human and, therefore, undeserving of their own basic rights. Your "Asante" ethnicity won't matter over your black skin - how would you like to be called a monkey?
On the topic of this case, it is an unreasonable sentence to be meted out so harshly on such a petty crime. It goes a long way to show not only the incompetence of some judges in Gh, but the the incompetence of the value system as it relates to the extent of a crime committed as well as the need of the perpetrator. I recall how my father and uncle, the current BNI director, fondly recollect the efficient, although strict, period of J.J.Rawling's rule over the Republic of Ghana. :-)

5 years for stealing a goat and confessing, when Cocaine dealers are set free or at least not prosecuted,
- party financiers who stole from national coffers using devious legal means to steal $51 millions as judgment debts are not prosecuted. Ghana has seen cocaine turned into baking soda right under the eyes of the police!
- Ministers and Speakers of the House are involved in theft from furniture to ordering $165,000 BMW as part of a government order without authorization;
- over $200 million stolen through such channels and Business Laptops purchase deals with RLG and projects such as SAD forestation, Guinea Fowls,
- and many other over-spending money with no consequences.
All our Presidents can do is set up committees and more committees for years and the President sits on them with no action, which any ordinary person would think implicates them also as participants!
Look, we have disgraced ourselves and if a revolution or war will come to Ghana it won’t be because of election dispute. No! It will be because of endemic social injustice that has been brewing for a long time due to the economic and judicial disparity.
We need to change our criminal codes!

Some like Odro Barton have even found their way into Ghana's parliament to become deputy speaker of parliament . Yes, we hold in high esteem intellectual criminals and incarcerate petty criminals to ridiculous jail terms.
