10 Girls Raped In Ghana Daily

Hardly a day goes by without a report on a child defilement case in the media, and according to child rights groups working on the issue, at least 10 girls under the age 16 are defiled every day in the country.

They say that even though the cases reported in themselves are alarming, they constitute only about 10% of such abuses, as the overwhelming majority of the cases are hushed.

The penalty for defilement was increased in the 1998 amendment to the Criminal Code (ACT 29) to a minimum of seven and a maximum of 25 years without an option of a fine. Yet recent studies show that sexual abuse of children in Ghana is still alarming high.

Figures from the then Ministry for Women and Children Affairs (MOWAC) put the annual case of reported defilement cases at around 800 a year, but according to one of the groups working to stop the practice, Light For Children Ghana, this is only a small portion of an alarming national catastrophe.

For this year alone, Ghana News Agency bulletins have been recording an average of about three defilement case a day.

The majority of the defilement cases are hushed, according to child psychologists, because in some case the victims do not understand what has happened to them or are afraid of being shamed or accused of being bad girls.

Some guardians also prefer to keep such incidence to themselves.

This is especially the case where the abusers happen to be family members. There have also been cases of neighbors, teachers, pastors and all sorts of people abusing girls some as young as two years.

There are also instances where guardians go to the police, but later stop following the case and give up because they find the processes cumbersome, studies indicate.

Eight year old girl has died after she was defiled by a 55 year old man in Enchi in the Western Region.

The suspect Enoch Asante defiled the girl on the 14th of September but she died on Friday, September 27th after complaining of pains in her abdomen.

Her body has since been deposited at the Enchi Government Hospital morgue.

The man is on remand at Enchi police station on provisional charge of defilement.

Chief Inspector Abban Koomson tells Joy News the suspect will be arraigned on October 9.

He also hinted of fresh charges to be levelled against Enoch Asante after the sudden death of the victim.

COMMENTARY ON THE RESCUE OF THE 33 MINERS IN CHILE: THE LESSONS FOR GHANA

This day, October 13, will no doubt feature significantly on the calendar of the Chilean people as well as the global mining community. It is a day that brought to an end the ordeal of 33 miners, who were cut off from the earthâ€™s surface after 700 thousand tonnes of rocks collapsed on August 5, and sealed the men 700 metres underground.

Right from Day one, the Chilean authorities made frantic efforts to determine the fate of the miners whether they were dead or alive. It was all joy on August 22, when the miners surprised the global community about their survival.

The Chilean authorities did race against time to rescue the miners. Now all the efforts have yielded dividend when the first of the 33 miners, Florencio Avalos emerged three hours after last midnight, beaming with smiles after a 30 minute journey in the missile-like capsule.

Eighty feared dead in Ghanaian mine disaster

ACCRA, June 28 (Xinhua) — A total of 80 miners trapped at the Central Region of Ghana were feared dead after they escaped from a flooded mining pit to another one which later caved in, a local official and witnesses confirmed on Monday.

An official of the Regional Coordinating Council, Kwame Oppong told Xinhua that information available to the council said the miners are part of about 120 miners in the illegal mine who escaped to an adjoining mine pit after water gushed into the one they were working in on Sunday at Dunkwaw-on-Offin.

“Suddenly, the second mine also caved in trapping at least 80 of them,” he stated, adding that rescue operations were underway hoping to find some survivors. However witnesses told Xinhua that given the nature of the disaster, finding survivors was almost impossible.

Oppong said that the Fire Service had been deployed to pump water out of the illegal mining pit to save those trapped since 2 p.m. on Sunday. But regional fire officer Augustine Dankwa told Xinhua that the fire station in the district was ill-equipped to deal with the emergency situation.

There were no fire tenders at Dunkwah, and those of Obuasi, the nearest fire station had also broken down, he said.

According to Dankwah, the fire tenders had broken down over six months ago but parts could not be procured to repair them.

He however said the District Fire Officer of Dunkwa and a safety officer had been deployed to assess the situation so appropriate measures could be taken.

Kumasi residents condemn macho rapist

Some residents in Kumasi have described as callous and barbaric the conduct of a heavily built man said to have forcibly had sex with a 19-year old girl in public.

Twenty-nine year old gym instructor, Eric Adjei-Bawuah was arrested at Asafo on Wednesday after the dastardly act he visited on his victim in the full glare of about 50 bystanders.

The victim was on her way to board a vehicle to Accra when the suspect was said to have forced her into a taxi and then into a drinking spot where he raped her.

Residents have been expressing shock at Bawuah's behaviour, and want justice for the victim.

Some of them were at the Regional Police headquarters to catch a glimpse of the suspect.

Reggae musician, Sasha Marley is one of those demanding that the law comes heavily on Bawuah.

'Is it sickness in the mind or what, doctors have to examine his mind and if he is in the right mind, he got to be dealt with according to the laws of the land. No one is above the law' he said.

Marley also wants the authorities to help weed out all social misfits from the society.

Meanwhile, relatives of the victim have dismissed Bawuah's claims that she is a prostitute who had consented to the sexual affair.

An elder sister, Akosua Mensah, who said she personally saw-off her sister at dawn of Wednesday, claimed the victim is an apprentice in Accra and has been experiencing pain in her private part in addition to having sleepless nights and loss of appetite since the attack on her.

Eric Adjei-Bawuah who claimed to be a gym instructor in Accra is expected to be arraigned before court on Monday August 3rd on robbery and rape charges.

If someone ask them to do something, or travel a distance from home, to attend to a task, they should come and ask permission from you, first.

God will give you the discernement whether the circumstances is appropriate, or not, for your little one. Let it be a warning to them.

If they are far from home, they should be able to call and ask
permission from the parents, guardians, brothers or sisters, teachers, sunday school oversea
etc.

How should the girl leave the Church premises without the consent of the mother?

Let us all keep an eye on the little ones. Have an attitude of being a watchman/watchwoman over the little ones and take the responsiibility of instructing them to desist from an act, or being in ceratin places at odd times, on the slightest suspicion.

Killing Of Deformed Children

Realistically, the Ghanaian
enlightenment movement is
expanding. Traditional inhibitive
values are being critically
scrutinized boldly without fear of
ethnocentrisms. It is in this
sense that deformed children, for
centuries killed in some parts of
Ghana, for being evil, are getting
not only media and civil society
attention but of late officialdom.
Some of the deformed children
are killed and used by traditional
witch-doctors and juju-marabou
spiritual mediums in all kinds of
bizarre spiritual rituals.
The Ghana News Agency, which
have been investigating the
killing of deformed children in
some parts of northern Ghana,
explains that” the common belief
among some communities in the
North that children born with
deformities are “spirit children”
and considered too evil or a
taboo to be sheltered and
catered for.”
Encouraged by the on-going
enlightenment movement that
seeks the refinement of certain
inhibitive cultural practices that
stifles Ghanaians’ progress, in
Hawawu Gariba, Ghana’s Deputy
Minister of Women and Children’s
Affairs, the main strategy to
address the killing of deformed
children is more public education
informed by science, values of
globalization, human rights,
prosperity, and climate. It doesn’t
matter if it is a crime in Ghanaian
law books,” for any person or
group of persons to take another
person’s life” simply because the
person is deformed, the troubles
come from ignorance stalled in
primordial traditions.
Believe me, even some educated
Ghanaians, still heavily
superstitious, kill deformed
children for being possessed
with evil spirits.
Like most of the inhibitive
cultural practices that are
currently under attack for
refinement, the Ghanaian society
is aware of the sensitivity of
confronting such deep-seated
erroneous ancient beliefs. No
matter its co-operative manner,
the key is caution, respect and
the understanding of where
such inhibitive cultural practices
are coming from. The Ghanaian
enlightenment movement does
acknowledge that it is a
complicated enterprise
confronting such erroneous
beliefs. How do you let people
change certain ways of life that
they have being practicing for
centuries, that it is counter-
productive today to live that
untrue ways; that the deformed
baby has the right to live like any
normal person; that it is a crime
to kill anybody no matter the
nature of their physical form.
“This issue is a very sensitive one
because it deals with people’s
perception and beliefs, therefore,
there is the need for one to be
cautious when dealing with it,”
Hawawu Gariba accurately
acknowledges to the Ghana
News Agency.
In a developing atmosphere of
democratic tenets of the rule of
law, freedoms, human rights, and
social justice, the challenging of
traditional mindset of killing
deformed kids is thoroughly
multi-dimensional. With the mass
media driving the enlightenment
campaigns, the strategy of
tackling the killing of deformed
babies are: launch educational
campaigns that target
communities and perpetrators of
the act; bring on-board religious,
women organizations, civil
society, educational outfits,
traditional bodies, governmental
and local non-governmental
institutions, help from
international non-governmental
institutions, and involve opinion
leaders, local assembly members,
and parliamentarians.
What is very encouraging about
Accra’s attempts to free
communities from the clutches of
believing that disabled babies are
evil and should be killed is
bringing the global experiences
to the local situation, vigorously
use mass communications tools,
employ civic bodies, and the
outstanding successful stories of
people born with deformities
who came out superbly as
thinkers, scientists, leaders, etc.
and helped their societies.
Hawawu Gariba says Accra is to
show video documentaries in the
communities where there are
killings of deformed children to
give weight to the fact that
deformities aren’t evil; that
deformities need not prevent
one from living a lovely full life;
and that “given the necessary
assistance and attention,
deformed people could
contribute greatly to the
development of their
communities.”
