National Chairman of the People’s National Convention (PNC) Bernard Mornah has expressed disappointment and sadness in his flagbearer, Edward Nasigri Mahama for having accepted the position of an ambassador conferred on him by President Akufo-Addo.

According to him, Mahama’s acceptance of the appointment is contradictory to his very own principles. He argues that the PNC flagbearer previously fought against members of the party; Mallam Issah and Ambrose Dery among others who accepted positions from other governments without consulting the party, he therefore finds it unacceptable that he would repeat the same.

“It weakens the ability to say that it is the [Dr.] Edward Mahama I know because the PNC as I said has not been consulted….we have no idea”, he said.

His argument centered on the fact that Mr. Mahama must reject the offer if he found it wrong to accept previous positons under former President J J Rawlings and former President John Agyekum Kufour.

“If it was wrong to serve under president JJ Rawlings…if in his view it was wrong to serve at the higher office of vice president under president Kufuor, or as a minister of health, it cannot be right to serve as an ambassador of ambassadors, he stated.

Mr. Mahama at the back of these comments has refuted the suggestions of Bernard Mornah . Describing them as ‘outright lies’, Mr Mahama said he proposed to these persons to pursue the appointments. According to him, he accepted the position because of his love for the country and his passion to serve.

“He [Bernard Mornah] is speaking out of ignorance, malice or outright lies. In fact, I proposed Ambrose Dery to go into the NPP government. Moses Daniba served under the NPP government; I never chaired a meeting to expel any of them so what he is saying are outright lies.”

“What I did not do in 2000 was that I would not serve as a vice president unless it was a party to party agreement. A vice president is serving under a particular manifesto that the candidate puts up in the year he is elected. Ambassador is ambassador for Ghana, there is a difference.”

Edward Mahama was sworn in by President Akufo-Addo together with 21 others who have been assigned to other countries. He will be playing the role of an ambassador with special duties but not appointed to a particular country.
