New Chamber: Parliament sensitive to public concern – Kate Addo

Members of Parliament are sensitive to the concerns raised by the general public regarding the proposed 450-seat new chamber for the legislature, Ms Kate Addo, Director of Public Affairs of Parliament, has said.

She explained that there was the need to listen to the concerns of the electorate who voted for the MPs to make laws on their behalf.

Social media – Facebook and Twitter – have been awash with harsh criticism against the Ghanaian parliament and its leadership in connection with the new proposed chamber.

Speaking on Ghana Yensom on Accra 100.5FM on Friday, 5 July 2019, Ms Addo said: “We're aware of people’s sentiments about this matter. We all know that MPs deliberate and make laws but we need to know that somebody has to take you there to do that.

“And, so, if the person who took you there has questions about your actions, you need to regroup quickly with what you are doing.”

She further indicated that if parliament will go ahead with the construction of the new chamber, the proposal will be repackaged in a manner that will be acceptable to the electorate.

“If we're going to do it, we're going to present it in a manner that will be acceptable by the people.

“We need to be mindful of the timing and people’s sensibilities. Parliament, as an institution, recognises the outcry.”
