  The international crowd that patronizes the indigenous musicians is often of a different category and demography, than those that the other artists may largely appeal to. Infact that audience size is usually smaller than the other. Also to note that the exotic audience crowd is also not completely cut off from listening to the other artists.
  The exotic artists are often booked for small festivals across the globe. The booking agents specifically pick them for these crowds.
  Its mainly about the marketing really and not so much about the music type.

  But there is a lot of truth in her argument. "Normal" may be more popular in the short term, but "exotic" will have a longer shelf life because it is different or more authentic.
