As you get older you learn to be prudent in relationships. You learn to prioritize. You learn that healthy relationships are a mixture of GIVE and RECEIVE. And we are not talking merely about money or gifts. With maturity you also learn that your time is a very valuable but limited asset and this is particularly true if you are in a position where there are constant demands made n you. Also as you mature emotionally, intellectually and spiritually you may gradually realize that you no longer have much in common with past friends and contacts because your values, goals and priorities in life have changed for the better and you are moving on.
I get the impression that some of these "friends" that this young man is talking about are not really friends and he has correctly identified them as exploiters, parasites ,time wasters and as people who do not value him as a person but rather only value what he has . I have heard wealthy people complain that some of their extended family members and friends only contact them when they need money or need help in meeting various expenses. On the other hand these rich people value and appreciate others who demonstrate that they value people for themselves rather than for what they can get. If you are on the other side remember this: Don't only call people when you have bills to pay and you want their help but also learn to show some humanity by contacting them to find out how they are and be quick to show empathy if you hear they are experiencing some difficulties or a health issue. Even the odd random call to say hi is appreciated. THIS IS WHY GENEROUS AND THOUGHTFUL PEOPLE ALSO TEND TO ATTRACT GENEROSITY AND KINDNESS TOWARDS THEMSELVES. Self-centered narcistic people tend to end up alone in their time of need.
