Thousands of Ghanaians have unusual marriage arrangements whereby spouses live apart sometimes for years! The main excuse given is usually for economic reasons but on closer inspection you'll find that these sorts of marital arrangementa are plagued by many serious issues.In order of importance these are:
1.Children being brought up by only one parent. This is by far the most serious disadvantage . It is a well known fact that single parenthood is associated with a much higher risk in children of emotional disfunction, mental health issues ,deliquency, increased risk of crime,increased risk of involvement with drugs etc etc.The truth of the matter is that children are best nurtured and raised in a home where both father and mother are constantly living together under the same roof, committed to each other and working together as a team to perform the difficult task of raising children well especially in today's perilous environment.There is no such thing as good remote parenting in the first 15-20 years of the life of children.
2.Spouses living separate lives tend to drift away from each other and usually end up in the arms of other members of the opposite sex (of course this does not bother some people who have very relaxed moral values- they view their spouse merely as a means to help them procreate children much the same as animals do)
This kind of self-imposed separation is often associated with emotional and mental ill-health in one or both spouses especially as people get older and begin to realiize the extent of harm they have done to themselves and their children.
