I didn’t expect my TGMA nominations – Lalid

Ghanaian artiste Lalid has expressed shock over his nominations at the Telecel Ghana Music Awards (TGMAs), describing the moment as a major milestone in his career.

Speaking in an interview with Anita Akuffo on TV3 on May 5, 2026, Lalid revealed that he did not anticipate receiving nominations in the Best New Artiste of the Year and Best Hip-Hop Song categories.

“I didn’t see the two nominations I had coming, which are the Best New Artiste of the Year and Best Hip-Hop Song at the TGMAs. I feel like I worked for it, so if it’s here, then I would have to embrace it,” he said.

According to him, music has always been part of his life, although he initially had to balance it with his education.

“It’s been music since childhood, but I was just trying to balance school with music. Now it’s music full-time, and the reception has been okay,” he stated.

He noted that while he acknowledges his progress, he remains focused on working harder to reach greater heights.

“I’m still working hard to be up there, but for now, I feel like I’m still getting what I deserve gradually,” he shared.

Lalid also spoke about his song “Matter,” which he described as a spontaneous creation that gained unexpected popularity.

“My song, ‘Matter’ was just full of vibe. I wasn’t really preaching about a particular topic. It was just me vibing and I recorded that. I didn’t know it was going to be as big as it is now,” he explained.

He disclosed that the song initially did not receive much attention, prompting him to promote another track at the time.

However, things changed when the song began gaining traction on the social media platform TikTok.

“I had a song I was promoting last year and at that time, Matter was already dropped, but it didn’t hit. People didn’t pay attention to that, so I was promoting the new one. Along the line, I realised people were using Matter on TikTok, so I had to leave the one I was promoting and hopped on the trend as well,” he said.

He described the nominations as a significant achievement and expressed optimism about winning.

“Getting these nominations means everything to me at this stage of my career. My team and I are so excited and we’re hoping we can win at least one of them,” he added.
