Ghanaian fashion icon Nana Akua Addo has called on stakeholders in the entertainment industry to stop looking down on content creators, arguing that digital creators deserve the same recognition as traditional celebrities.

Speaking in an interview on Peace FM on June 25, 2026, Nana Akua Addo mentioned that the creative industry has evolved and should no longer be divided into categories that undermine the contributions of social media personalities.

“We shouldn’t sugar-coat this. Four or five years ago, when we said someone is a slay queen, it was something positive,” she said.

According to her, some individuals who consider themselves A-list celebrities or gatekeepers are still holding on to outdated views instead of embracing the changing landscape of the entertainment industry.

“One thing I want our industry to grow from is that there are some people who call themselves the A-list stars or the gatekeepers, who are living in the past glory. They call some people TikTok stars, but it’s talent,” she stated.

Using the recent Snapchat partnership involving Chef Abbys as an example, Nana Akua Addo stressed that opportunities are now determined by one's body of work rather than traditional celebrity status.

“Let's look at Chef Abbys. Snapchat didn't choose Empress Gifty or me. She's the one Snapchat called. It tells you about the body of work,” she shared.

She acknowledged that while she is widely known for fashion, many digital creators command larger online audiences, noting that this does not diminish the value of anyone's work.

“I’m a fashion queen, but I may not have the numbers these creators have. It doesn’t mean I’m not also trying my best,” she said.

Nana Akua Addo further urged the industry to unite all creatives instead of labelling them as "just TikTokers," adding that Ghana could learn from Nigeria's approach to supporting talent across different creative fields.

“The industry we’re in now is not the one we knew twenty years ago. We have to bring all these creators together and not categorise them as just TikTokers. Now, the creative space in Ghana is large. Nigeria's creative space is broad and that’s because they embrace every creative person,” she added.
