Ghana does not have a single consolidated "Family Leave Act."
Instead, leave entitlements for workers are governed by the Labour Act, 2003 (Act 651), which details specific time-off provisions rather than comprehensive family or parental leave:
Maternity Leave: Female employees are entitled to a minimum of 12 weeks of fully paid leave, with an additional two weeks granted in cases of multiple births or complications.
Nursing mothers are also legally permitted a one-hour daily break during work hours to breastfeed without any deduction in pay.
Paternity Leave: Currently, there is no universal statutory paternity leave, though legislative proposals have aimed to introduce a minimum of 5 days to two weeks of paternity leave. Fathers must typically negotiate time off with employers or use their accrued annual leave.
Other Leave: The law provides for paid annual leave and sick leave. Leave for family illness or bereavement is generally subject to company-specific policies or collective bargaining agreements rather than national mandates.
