Broadcaster and General Manager of Sompa FM, Akosua Ago Aboagye, has highlighted the critical role employers can play in supporting working mothers, crediting a former employer with helping her navigate one of the most difficult periods of her life.

Speaking at the second edition of Convergence of Mothers organised by media personality MzGee, Ago Aboagye reflected on the challenges she faced after giving birth while pursuing a university degree and working in the media industry.

According to her, the transition into motherhood was far more difficult than she had anticipated.

After giving birth and caring for twins, she struggled with the physical and emotional demands of motherhood, losing significant weight and dealing with the pressures of breastfeeding, recovery and work expectations.

During that period, she said her former employer, Dr. Osei Kwame Despite of Despite Media, noticed the toll the situation was taking on her.

When he visited her at home and saw her condition, he decided to make adjustments to her workload to help her cope.

"He said what he would do to help me was that after three months, I should read only the 6 a.m. news and then go back home to take care of my twins," she recounted.

Ago Aboagye described the gesture as life-changing and praised her former employer for recognising the realities many working mothers face.

"That is why I said we should applaud him," she told the audience.

According to her, not every employer would be willing to offer such flexibility.

The broadcaster noted that support systems are often discussed in terms of family and spouses, but workplaces also have a significant role to play in helping mothers succeed professionally while caring for their children.

Her experience, she said, demonstrated how understanding leadership can make a meaningful difference in the lives of employees, particularly women navigating the early stages of motherhood.
