Two individuals coming sometimes from completely different backgrounds (because they grew up in different homes and different environments and because they also have different natural tendencies) will quickly discover areas of disagreements on a wide variety of issues after they set up home together as a married couple. But those who are smart will learn over the years to adjust to each other, learn to be more of a "giver" and less of a "taker". "GIVERS" tend to be considerate, gentle, kind-hearted and empathetic while "TAKERS" are self-centred, insensitive, never admit they are wrong, never apologise (the word “sorry” is not part of their vocabulary) and have no desire to see the other person's point of view.
THE MOST BEAUTIFUL MARRIAGES ARE THE ONES BETWEEN TWO "GIVERS" BECAUSE EACH PARTNER IS WILLING TO MAKE THE OFTEN-PAINFUL ADJUSTMENTS AND COMPROMISES NECESSARY TO BUILD A HARMONIOUS HOME AND FAMILY. AS A RESULT OF THIS ATTITUDE, OVER MANY YEARS THEY BECOME THE CLOSEST OF FRIENDS AND COMPANIONS. ON THE OTHER HAND, A MARRIAGE BETWEEN TWO "TAKERS" QUICKLY BECOMES ACRIMONIOUS, BITTER AND A CONSTANT TUG OF WAR MATCH.
A MARRIAGE BETWEEN A "GIVER" AND A "TAKER" IS ALSO EMOTIONALLY DRAINING FOR THE “GIVER” IN THE MARRIAGE AND CAN ALSO LEAD TO DESPONDENCY, DISLUSSIONMENT AND EVEN EMOTIONAL DISTRESS OR CLINICAL DEPRESSION.
While it is true that some people are natural born "Givers" or "Takers" most of these behaviour patterns are the result of behaviour learned, usually from the homes or the environment they grew up in.
BUT HERE IS THE GOOD NEWS: BAD BEHAVIOUR OR BAD AND DESTRUCTIVE HABITS CAN BE UNLEARNED (ALBEIT PAINFULLY) AND REPLACED WITH GOOD RELATIONSHIP BUILDING BEHAVIOUR AND HABITS. SO, THE SELFISH AND INCONSIDERATE "TAKER" CAN LEARN TO BECOME A THOUGHTFUL, KINDHEARTED "GIVER" IF THEY HAVE THE HUMILITY TO RECOGNISE THAT THEY HAVE A SERIOUS PROBLEM AND ARE WILLING TO MAKE THE PAINFUL ADJUSTMENTS REQUIRED.
HAVE YOU EVER HEARD OF THE THREE “C” s OF SUCCESSFUL MARRIAGES? HERE THEY ARE:
