For years, Ghanaian playwright, producer and director George Quaye has used the stage not merely to entertain audiences, but to provoke thought, challenge societal norms and inspire meaningful conversations.
From confronting discrimination and advocating prison reform in Beyond the Walls to exposing the painful realities of child trafficking in The Wet Ones, Quaye has consistently demonstrated a commitment to telling stories that matter.

This August, Quaye returns with another ambitious theatrical work, Gayina's Pound of Flesh, an original African adaptation of William Shakespeare's The Merchant of Venice.
Produced by Image Bureau in partnership with April Communications and the National Theatre of Ghana, the production will be staged on Saturday, August 1, Sunday, August 2, Saturday, August 8 and Sunday, August 9, 2026, with performances at 4:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. each day.
Rather than simply relocating Shakespeare's famous story to an African setting, Gayina's Pound of Flesh reimagines the classic through the realities of contemporary Ghanaian life.
Set in the bustling commercial city of Kumasi, the play explores the intersections of commerce, culture, religion and justice. At its centre is Efo Gayina, a traditionalist moneylender whose years of ridicule and exclusion because of his indigenous beliefs have shaped his worldview.
Opposing him is Kwasi Oppong Kyekyeku, a respected Christian businessman whose friendship with the financially troubled Akwasi Afrifa leads to a financial agreement with consequences far beyond what any of them anticipated.
When that agreement is broken, the story builds towards an emotionally charged courtroom confrontation that forces audiences to wrestle with one timeless question:
Can justice truly exist without mercy?
Like many of Quaye's previous works, Gayina's Pound of Flesh draws attention to issues that remain deeply relevant in today's society. Through compelling characters, humour, emotional performances and authentic Ghanaian dialogue, the play examines religious intolerance, prejudice, loyalty, friendship, forgiveness and the dangers of excluding people simply because they are different.
Speaking about the inspiration behind the work, Quaye explains that his fascination with The Merchant of Venice has always centred on one character.
“Shylock has fascinated me for years. His famous speech in Act Three, Scene One never left me. I kept asking myself what those words would sound like if they were spoken by a Ghanaian who had endured the same rejection, ridicule and pain. That curiosity eventually became Efo Gayina.”
Beyond the stage, Quaye hopes the play will contribute to literary studies in Ghana by offering students a culturally familiar gateway into Shakespeare's work.
“One of my aspirations has always been to create a Ghanaian literary text that students can connect with while engaging one of history's greatest playwrights. If this adaptation inspires young people to appreciate Shakespeare through an African lens, then it will have achieved something truly worthwhile,” he says.
