Marriage is often described as a journey built on love, patience and understanding. But contrary to what some may believe, a strong marriage is not necessarily one without disagreements.

Couples can argue, disagree and challenge each other and still have a healthy relationship.

In many cases, what matters is not whether couples argue, but how they handle disagreements, communicate afterwards and repair any hurt caused.

Here are eight signs that may suggest your marriage has a strong foundation.

1. You argue, but you resolve your disagreements

Disagreements are a normal part of relationships. Couples may clash over money, family, parenting, household responsibilities and other issues.

The key is what happens after the disagreement.

If you can discuss your differences, listen to each other and find a way forward rather than allowing every argument to become a lasting source of resentment, it can be a positive sign for the relationship.

2. You can apologise to each other

Being able to say “I’m sorry” can go a long way in maintaining a healthy relationship.

When both partners can acknowledge when they have hurt each other instead of constantly trying to prove who is right, disagreements are less likely to turn into competitions.

An apology does not necessarily mean one person is entirely at fault. Sometimes, it simply shows that the relationship matters more than winning an argument.

3. You feel safe being yourself

A strong marriage should give both partners room to express their opinions, concerns and emotions without constantly pretending to be someone they are not.

You should be able to laugh together, discuss uncomfortable issues and admit when you are struggling without worrying that your vulnerability will later be used against you.

4. You still enjoy each other’s company

Marriage comes with bills, work, responsibilities and family commitments, but friendship between partners can help keep the relationship connected.

If you genuinely enjoy talking, laughing, spending time together, or simply being in the same room, it can strengthen the relationship beyond romantic attraction.

5. You support each other’s growth

A healthy marriage does not mean partners must do everything together.

Couples can have different interests, careers and personal ambitions while still encouraging each other to grow.

Being able to celebrate your partner’s achievements rather than feeling threatened by them can also help strengthen the relationship.

6. You can talk openly about money

Money can become a major source of tension in marriages.

Couples who can openly discuss income, spending, savings, debts and financial expectations are better positioned to address potential problems before they become bigger sources of conflict.

Honest conversations about finances can also help partners understand each other’s priorities and make decisions together.

7. You respect each other even when you disagree

This is perhaps one of the most important signs of a healthy relationship.

You can be angry with your partner without insulting, humiliating, threatening or deliberately hurting them.

Disagreement does not have to destroy respect.

Arguing can be normal, but contempt, intimidation and abuse are not.

8. You still choose each other after difficult moments

Every long-term relationship will face difficult periods.

Illness, financial pressure, family problems, parenting challenges and other unexpected situations can test a couple.

A strong marriage is not necessarily one where nothing goes wrong. It is one where both partners are willing to face problems together, communicate honestly and make reasonable efforts to repair the relationship.

Ultimately, no list can guarantee that a marriage will last. Relationships change over time, and what works for one couple may not work for another.

However, when two people can disagree without tearing each other down, communicate honestly, maintain mutual respect and continue making an effort, they create a stronger foundation for their marriage to grow.

And sometimes, the fact that you can argue, work through the disagreement and still find your way back to each other may be a sign that the relationship is stronger than you think.
