Just so that they can point their fingers at scapegoats, trying as much as possible not to look at their own mistakes, by trying to lay the whole blame at other persons' doorsteps, ignoring the beam in their own eyes. While they are pointing at others, three fingers point back at their own stupidity.

In this case, you don't need "mermaids' spirits" -
just don't enter deep water if you can't swim.

(Check: "Occam's razor", "Psychological Projections", "Scapegoating"-Tactics)

The same would be, if you eat your favourite monkey-"bushmeat" and get ebola and later blame "evil bush-spirits" for it. Or if you had sex unprotected with strangers and get Hepatitis B or HIV or syphilis and then blame a "curse" via the "lesser gods" on it.

Look at all the fake "prophets" and traditional "voodoo"-priests, who have all failed recently with their "curses" and "visions" - and then look at you wanting to propagate hear-say blind belief in "sea gods".
