I am glad to hear this from a person who is not from Ghana. It is a shame some Ghanaians do not like speaking their local language to their children, and they feel happy and proud when speaking English to them.

1. Ghanaians abroad are a relatively small population so the children do not have anyone to speak to at school.
2. Children develop their vocabulary speaking to other children. Parent-Child discussion is quite limited.

3. Parents may know how to speak but lack the actual teaching ability.
4. Parents come home tired after a hard day on the job and truly are not ready to talk too much.

If Ghanaians will able to use our local language I believe that much can be done to help our country to move ahead.

The essence of what is being said is that native language is good. I am an Akan but I weep for the non-Akans in particular as their language is being slowly wiped out by the Akan language

Language plays a critical role in society including, by all accounts, enabling the development of native children.

Be a patriot - love your language, institutions etc; we are not saying be a nationalist - which in its pristine form holds in contempt other languages, institutions etc
