President John Dramani Mahama has proposed that every Ghanaian undergo basic health screening at least once a year under the newly launched Free Primary Healthcare initiative.

According to him, the programme is designed to complement the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) by strengthening preventive care and promoting early detection of illnesses.

Speaking at the launch on Wednesday, April 15, 2026, the President underscored the importance of regular screening as a cornerstone of the initiative.

“One key aspect of the Free Primary Healthcare is prevention; to identify illnesses early and provide treatment before they develop into more serious conditions. So, a major part of this initiative is the health screening component,” he said.

He further called on traditional and religious leaders to support the rollout by mobilising their communities to participate.

“I encourage our traditional and religious leaders to help mobilise their communities when we roll out the Free Primary Healthcare programme. At the very least, every Ghanaian should be screened once a year and receive basic health checks,” President Mahama stated.

The Free Primary Healthcare programme, according to the President, is expected to reduce the burden of advanced illnesses on hospitals and families by ensuring that citizens receive regular check-ups and timely treatment.
